Dentures are a great treatment option for those patients who may be missing teeth. Many patients choose dentures because they do not require a surgical procedure to have them fitted and they are versatile. There are two types of implants, which include complete and partial. A complete denture is one that replaces all of your teeth while a partial only replaces a couple of them.
The type of material used for your denture can vary and at Thornton Town Center Family Dental, we will present you with a variety of options that will work for you. A Valplast denture is one of the common options and it is made from a flexible acrylic like material. This denture is easy on the mouth and does not cause irritation and also does not look fake when in use. Another option is a metal framed denture and this option is comfortable, but it is not flexible like the Valplast option. When you have a metal framed denture, the temperature of foods and drinks will be pleasant, and you do not have to worry about too much sensitivity.
Why Choose Dentures for Tooth Replacement?
Dentures are ideal for patients who are missing some or all of their teeth. This type of replacement option is typically chosen when dental implants are not an option or when you do not want implants. While you may not want to replace your missing teeth, it is important that you do and there are reasons for this.
First, if you are missing teeth and you do not replace them, your jaw will start to shrink over time and your facial structure will change in appearance. You may notice that your face will sag, and you may not like the new look. To prevent this from happening, you would need to have your teeth replaced.
If you do have dentures, you will not experience sag or shrinking of the face and you will keep your same facial structure.
What Are Immediate and Conventional Dentures?
You have two options when it comes to dentures and that includes either immediate or conventional dentures. Immediate dentures are placed into your mouth immediately once all of your teeth have been extracted for the dentures. This option is best for patients who need to have teeth due to work or social reasons. It is important that you understand that your dentures will need to be adjusted regularly as your jaw bone diminishes and shrinks.
Conventional dentures are not immediate, and they are placed into your mouth once the gums have healed and your jaw bone will no longer shrink. It may take a few months for this process to be completed, so it is important to understand that you may not have teeth for a few months.
What to Expect When You Choose Dentures
Here at Thornton Town Center Family Dental, we want you to be able to enjoy your smile and love the way it looks. Because of that, we do offer dentures here in our office. We believe that it is important to cover some information about dentures to ensure you fully understand what to expect when you choose them as your tooth replacement option.
When you first put dentures into your mouth, you will find that they are not very comfortable. They will become comfortable over time, but it will take a bit for you to get used to it and you will need to practice speaking and eating to ensure that you are comfortable with your new dentures. Do not be afraid of them.
Patients will often experience an odd feeling as if they do not know what to do with their tongue. This will take time to get used to as well and you may feel as though your tongue is touching your dentures at all times. Once you have gotten used to the feel, you will not have to worry about it again.
Many patients do experience some type of soreness and irritation when the dentures are first placed. This is normal and should not alarm you. If the soreness or irritation does not go away within a few days or up to a week, call our office. You may need to have your dentures readjusted or realigned over time.
You will also need to come into our Thornton office so that our experienced and qualified dentists can check your dentures and make sure they are fitted properly. (This is often done at your routine dental checkups.)
Caring for Your New Dentures
While dentures are not natural or real teeth, they do still need to be taken care of and if you do not, they can become warped, uneven, stained, or they may cause soreness and irritation on the gums. It is important that you do brush and floss your dentures just as you would with your natural teeth. If you are unsure of how to do this, one of our dentists can show you.
Below, we will talk about how to properly care for your new dentures and what steps you should take to ensure they remain in good condition.
1. Start out by removing your dentures and rinsing them off after you eat something. After the debris and food is removed, you can then brush the dentures, softly, yet firmly, to remove any stuck food.
2. Once the dentures have been brushed, you will need to make sure you rinse them off thoroughly to remove all food and toothpaste. You can then place them into a solution made for your dentures and they should remain there for the specified amount of time. Once they have sat in the solution, you can then remove them and dry them thoroughly.
3. You will need to make sure you store your dentures in a clean, safe, and dry space. You do not want to leave them out where they may fall or get damaged.
4. After your dentures are cleaned, you should then proceed to clean your gums, tongue, and cheeks. You do not want to skip this step as it will lead to bad breath.
