Early Treatment

If your child has crooked teeth, you may be wondering at what point it is a good idea to take them to visit an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children receive some type of orthodontic treatment, even if just an evaluation, by the age of 7. Early treatment will allow dentists to catch any issues that may be present or may present themselves later on in the child’s life. The earlier that an issue is identified, the better.

The experts at Thornton Town Center Family Dental will work closely with you and your child to ensure that all orthodontic issues are quickly detected and that treatment plans are developed to ensure your child’s permanent smile will be healthy, beautiful, and as straight as can be. The orthodontists at Thornton Town Center Family Dental are trained to identify orthodontic issues in children YOUNGER than 7. We believe in providing you with the information you need to make choices about your child’s oral health. Knowing about possible problems beforehand is extremely beneficial, especially when it comes to treatment.

Patients who come into our Thornton office often ask us why they even need to worry about orthodontic treatment at such a young age. The reason behind early treatment is early diagnosis and the elimination of any additional issues that may arise too. Orthodontic treatment early on can help our dentists better understand the position of your child’s permanent teeth as they erupt.

Children who do need to receive early treatment will be treated here in our Thornton office by our experienced team of dentists and orthodontists. We will be able to better predict your child’s permanent smile with early interventions.

Is Early Treatment Beneficial?

Many parents often wonder if early orthodontic treatment is even beneficial for children at a young age and the answer is: it can be. Treatment for any condition, early or not, does not always work for everyone, but it does work for most and is recommended. There are many orthodontic problems that can be greatly improved, eliminated, and corrected with early treatment. In fact, some conditions can be prevented altogether with early detection that the problem may exist.

Almost all permanent teeth are in place by the time a child is 10, so treatment prior to that age is best. It is important to note that there are some issues that cannot be corrected prior to all of the permanent teeth coming in, but most conditions can be treated.

Our team of dentists and orthodontics will work closely with you to create a treatment plan that is based on the needs of your child.

Our Orthodontic Program Here at Thornton Town Center Family Dental

If it is determined that your child does NOT need to receive treatment at the time, they will be placed into our orthodontic program, which supervises your child’s oral development and keeps an eye on his or her teeth. This program is designed for people who will likely need to have treatment, but they are not quite ready for it.

In this program, we will be able to look at your child’s tooth growth pattern and quickly intervene when it is needed. Often times, children may need to have a couple of baby teeth removed to ensure that there is enough room for their permanent teeth to grow in. This program can also limit the possibility that your child may need to have braces.

Thornton Town Center Family Dental Cares About Your Child’s Future Smile

Here in our Thornton, CO office, we care about your child’s smile and will go the extra mile to make sure it is healthy and beautiful. We do not want your child to struggle with crooked teeth or a smile they are unhappy with, so we will provide them with the proper treatment in a timely manner to ensure they can always smile with confidence.

At Thornton Town Center Family Dental, we often see children every 6 to 8 months to reevaluate their orthodontic needs, but we may see your child more often or less often depending on their progress and development. You do not have to pay anything additional for this program, as we offer it to you as part of your child’s dental care.

Orthodontic treatment does provide your loved one with a beautiful smile, but there is much more to it than that. Braces can improve your child’s ability to learn how to properly clean his or her teeth and also improve the function of your child’s bite.

We have found that many parents do wonder if their child does receive early orthodontic treatment, if it will eliminate the need for the child to have braces. Often times, it does, but it is too difficult to say for sure because some conditions may worsen as the child grows and develops and braces may be needed to help.

One thing to keep in mind though is that early orthodontic treatment can prevent the need for intense treatment later on down the road too. If your teen does need orthodontic treatment once all permanent teeth come in, we can discuss the options at that time. You need to make sure you understand that not all orthodontic problems will present themselves in baby teeth and may not develop until the permanent teeth arrive.

The experts at Thornton Town Center Family Dental are here to help you and want to work with you to make sure your child’s teeth are as healthy as possible. We are committed to making sure that your child’s smile is straight and that all orthodontic issues are addressed as they arise.
