Porcelain Veneers: What Are They?

If you have never heard of porcelain veneers, do not start to panic just yet. They are not a painful option and they are not an overly expensive investment either. Many people have never heard of them and are first introduced to them when they come into our office and want a solution to the flaws on their teeth.

Porcelain veneers are made from a thin shell that is placed over top of the tooth to cover flaws and damage. The veneer is made from porcelain and is cemented into place, so it is a permanent solution.

Veneers are a good option and one of the more popular ones because they are durable and resistant to staining. You can enjoy your favorite sauces, wines, and more without the worry that the veneers will show it off. These thin shells are made to match the natural colors of your teeth, so they blend in and they don’t stand out.

Why Should I Choose Veneers?

If you are unsure of why you should choose veneers, you may want more of an explanation. Many individuals do like the look and feel of the veneer as opposed to other options. Since this option can be color-matched to your natural tooth color, you will find that they are much less noticeable than other options.

Veneers are also a good choice for those who have flaws in their front teeth. Do know that veneers cannot be used in the rear of the mouth.

Choosing veneers is a personal decision, but is one that does offer many benefits too, so you should consider them, along with any other options and recommendations presented to you.

Your Veneer Consultation and What to Expect

If you want to be considered for veneers, you will need to come into our office for a complete consultation. Our dentists will sit down with you and look over your teeth. We will take x-rays of your mouth to identify any problems that may not be visible during a traditional exam. If you are determined to be a good candidate for veneers, we will schedule an appointment for you to come in and receive treatment.

One of the most important things about veneers that many patients do not know is that veneers cannot just be placed on any teeth when you want them. Your teeth must be healthy to receive a veneer, and this means you may need to have a procedure or two performed before you can have veneers. For example, if you have a cavity on your front tooth, you would need to have it filled FIRST before you can receive the veneers.

Once you arrive the day of the procedure, our dentists will first remove some of the enamel from the tooth or teeth to receive the veneer. This is a painless process and happens quickly too. You may hear the process referred to as the preparation stage. You will never know that enamel has been removed from the tooth and once it has been shaped, you will then have an impression taken of the tooth and the lab will create a veneer for the tooth.

Once we receive the veneers in our office, you will be called back in to have them placed on your tooth or teeth. The veneer will be applied to the tooth without the adhesive first to make sure it fits and is the correct size. Once our dentists are happy with the way it looks, they will apply the adhesive cement and secure the veneer in place.

Are There Any Downsides to Veneers?

As with any type of procedure, there will always be some downsides that need to be considered. The first downside is that you need to be careful when you bite or chew any food or objects. You want to avoid biting your fingernails, ripping pieces of caramel loose, and chewing on pens or pencils. The reason is because your veneers can pop off and this can lead to damage to the tooth.

Another downside is that veneers are permanent. You may think of this as a positive, but some people want an option that is removable, and these are not. You will need to have your veneers replaced every 5 years or so as they do wear over time.

Lastly, while a veneer can hide flaws, it is not invincible, and it can still develop tooth decay. You do need to continue to brush and floss your teeth regularly to stop any decay before it starts.
